Part 6: From Bad to Worse

I was terrified at the sight of the enormous arachnid closing in on us. At my now reduced size of a cat, if that monster decided to come after me instead of Virgil, I’d be an easy meal. Virgil quickly turned to me and said-

“There’s an open vent on the wall behind that thing, I’ll distract it while you make run for it” I simply nodded and put some distance between us. Then without warning the spider jumped with incredible speed and landed on top of Virgil.

I watched terrified as Virgil wrestled with the monster that was now on top of him and it appeared to be trying to bite his head off with it’s huge fangs.
I realised I had to run now while it was focusing it’s attention on Virgil.
I ran as fast as could and dove safely into the open vent. I turned back and watched as Virgil again showed his unbelievable strength lifting the spider into the air and throwing it into a wall.
The Spider slammed against the wall, slid to the ground and appeared to be knocked out.

“Brilliant! Your strength has greatly increased” said Trask with a smirk as he watched from above. Virgil looked to me and yelled-

“GO! FIND HIM!” I looked back one last time and saw the spider get back up and it let out a horrible high pitched screech as it readied to attack again.

The noise the Spider was making forced me to run and my new feline ears felt as though they would start bleeding if I didn’t. I took off down the air vent and could hear Virgil’s fight behind me and the taunts of Trask as well. Soon I could hear nothing but the sound of flowing air through the ventilation system.

I stopped to catch my breath at this point and the magnitude of my current situation seemed to catch up with me.

‘How could I have let this happen? Is this all because of me? It’s my fault that these experiments have gotten this far… but I never intended for it to be used like this’ I thought despairingly.

‘Right now all I care about is putting an end to this, but unfortunately I must use Virgil to do that, I must allow Virgil do put his life on the line to help me.
I don’t like the idea of using a child to accomplish this goal, but I can’t see any other way’ I thought hard on this and pressed on through the vent.

I wandered through the vents for nearly ten minutes before I found an air vent leading up to the next floor. It was very difficult to climb given my currant form but for once I was actually glad I now had claws.
I managed to get up to the next floor and then I found a metal grating to the room I was looking for. But what I saw and smelled made my stomach turn.

The room contained two cylinder tanks. One was full with something small floating within and the other was broken open. I saw two guards and three scientists lying on the floor, all dead.
They hand been ripped apart and their blood coated the floor. The smell of blood and other foul odours combined were making me sick. I should have felt some remorse or pity for the dead lying about the room, but these were the people who had betrayed me and experimented on children without question. For all I cared, they got what they deserved.

I looked at the computer screen next to the tank and it had only two digits displayed on it… D6.

‘D6!? One of the D-series children! Could that have been what killed these people?’ I wondered in concern.

I suddenly heard a sound coming from nearby. It sounded like the noise the giant tarantula made as it screeched. Only it sounded lighter and smaller.
I darted through the vent following the sound until I came to another grating, I saw below me in a maintenance corridor, another huge spider standing in a dimly lit hallway, but this one was only half the size of the one I had left behind with Virgil.

I then realised this must be the spawn of the larger spider, it must have had eggs. But knowing a spider’s birth rate, there had to be a lot more of them out there in this facility now and that was going to cause problems if left unattended.
Suddenly something orange red came into view and it struck the spider in the head. It’s head was smashed open, splattering it’s green body fluids and it instantly dropped dead to the floor.

I finally got a good look at the spider’s attacker. It was a boy, but his features where no longer quite human. This boy appeared to have gone through the same changes as Virgil but his scales where orange red.
He had Semi long black hair with a pair of horns protruding from his skull. He had the same ear fins as Virgil and seemed to be at the stage where only his face remained human while the rest of his body had changed.
I watched curiously as the Dragon hybrid below me stared down at the green blood on his clawed cloven hand and then to the spider he had just killed.
His clothes were torn but I did notice the number on his shoulder. The number six, D6!

That must be Jack, I was about to call out to him when suddenly he gripped the spider with his left hand and tossed it hard into the ceiling, as if it were as light as a feather. As the dead spider fell back to the floor, the boy’s claws extended out suddenly into semi long blades. He then used them to slice the arachnid to pieces just before it hit the ground.

I couldn’t believe what I just saw, ‘what the hell did they do to this kid?’

I knew for a fact that dragons couldn’t extend their claws like that. Was it some kind of unintentional mutation or was this deliberate.
Jack’s claws shrunk back to their normal size but then he turned around, looked up… and spotted me.

He stared right at me. The green blood was splattered over his face and over what was left of his shirt.
I felt for a moment that he was going to attack, but he slowly turned away and took off running down the corridor.
My heart was beating fast, I felt like I had just had a near death experience and I let out a sigh of relief.
I had no doubt now that he was the one who had killed those people before.
I had to get back to Virgil quickly. Jack clearly was not acting of his own rational mind and if he found Virgil first, it was likely I may find him in pieces.
